Implementation of the national cleanyourhands campaign at NHS Hounslow
| NHS Hounslow has signed up to the national cleanyourhands campaign promoting hand hygiene in the community environment. It is part of our ongoing commitment to reducing healthcare associated infections. | ||
| The cleanyourhands campaign uses small changes to the system, such as making it quicker and easier to clean hands , and reminding staff to do this in a systematic way, to have an impact on staff behaviour. This change in behaviour should help reduce healthcare associated infections. | ||
| This can be further enhanced by actively encouraging feedback and prompting from our patients. By inviting patients to ask staff if they have cleaned their hands before they start a procedure, the campaign becomes even more effective. | ||
| NHS Hounslow has provided alcohol hand-rub gel in all doctors’ surgeries, dental practices and other healthcare buildings within its boundaries. So now all workers who come into contact with patients will be able to clean their hands in a quick and efficient manner. The PCT will also be putting up posters to remind health workers to wash their hands and others to encourage patients to remind them to do so. | ||
Sue Jeffers, Director of Quality and Healthcare Transformation at NHS Hounslow says: “There is no simple way of reducing healthcare associated infections. But studies show that infection rates can be reduced by 10-50% when healthcare staff regularly clean their hands, |
||
“The campaign aims to make it as easy as possible for healthcare workers to clean their hands at the right time and for the right task,” she adds. |
